  • You pedal and use the gears like you would on a normal bike but with the added benefit of a motor giving you a bit of help.

The amount of work you and the motor do depends on the setting you’re in. The Eco setting does around 10% of the work for you, Tour ~25% Sport ~50% & Turbo ~75%. You can easily switch between settings to suit you, maybe using a higher setting to cruise up a steep hill, or tackle a headwind.

Gears allow you to get the most out of the motor assistance and operate just the same as on a normal bike - choose an easier gear for going uphill and a harder gear for the flats and downhills.

  • The best way to think about the battery is like a tank of fuel. How far you get on a full battery will depend how you ride the bike and how much assistance you use. This can range from 100 miles on Eco, to 35 miles on Turbo setting.

A full battery is usually more than enough for a day’s cycling and the bike will still function as a bike if the battery runs out.

The bike computer clearly displays how many kilometres the battery has remaining in each mode while you ride.

If you’re concerned about running out of battery we can always provide you with the charger so you can top it up if needed.

  • Due to the assistance from the electric motor, riding an electric bike is less tiring than riding a normal bike. To be most comfortable, we have found that given the conditions on the day, it’s best to dress as if you are going for a walk. If you get too warm / cold, you can use the bag provided to carry extra layers of clothing.

  • The beauty of the Llyn peninsula is that there are so many wonderful places to explore. While cycling, its common to have panoramic sea views, as well as vistas across to Snowdonia and Anglesey. The peninsula has endless small, quiet lanes leading to villages, cafes and beaches and we’ll be happy to suggest suitable routes from your location. You can check out some of our favourite routes here.

We ask that you don’t cycle on the beach - sand and salty water drastically reduce the lifespan of our bikes.

You must also stay off the coast path as the section round the Llyn peninsula is designated as Public Footpath and as such, cycling is forbidden. It's also a very uneven surface and strewn with gates that are impassable with bikes.

  • The main traffic-free cycle path in the area is the Lon Eifion from Bryncir to Caernarfon (12 miles). A scenic mainly hard-surfaced path, along the track of a former railway offering wonderful views of Caernarfon Bay and Eryri / Snowdonia.

The northern half of the path passes close to several villages: Bontnewydd, Dinas, Groeslon and Penygroes and brings you to the impressive Caernarfon Castle.

We can deliver to the trail to allow you to do a completely traffic-free ride out and back along the cycle path.

  • You don’t need a licence to ride an electric bike in the UK, but the law states that you must be at least 14 years old. Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian when hiring from us.

Paddle board FAQs

  • When you hire a paddle board or come on a guided tour with Discover Llyn, you will be provided with the following:

Inflatable Stand Up Paddle board with paddle: our paddle boards are stable, sturdy and easy to use, guaranteeing you a fun time on the water. Being inflatable, the boards are easy to transport to different spots so you can explore more of Llyn’s coastline and Snowdonia’s lakes.

Pump: pump to inflate the board. An excellent way to warm up before getting on the water!

Leash: you should always use the leash to attach yourself to the board. The board is the best form of buoyancy, so staying connected to it at all times is essential to stay safe.

Buoyancy Aid: our buoyancy aids are designed to allow you plenty of movement so you can paddle freely and will provide you with additional floatation should you fall in - and the chances are you will!

Waterproof phone case: so you can take your phone and capture those special moments on the water, but also so you can call for help should you get into difficulty.

Click here for instructions on how to inflate your paddle board.

  • Yes, if done responsibly and in suitable conditions. Like all watersports there is an element of risk and we highly recommend checking out this excellent advice from the RNLI.

  • Anyone younger than 18 must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

  • You may want to wear a wetsuit if you have one, or sports clothing with the buoyancy aid provided on top.

  • There are plenty of suitable beaches to paddle board from on the Llyn Peninsula. If you’re not sure where best to go we are happy to advise.

There’s also plenty of amazing in-land paddle boarding to be done on the lakes in Eryri / Snowdonia. Simply request your paddle board deflated and in its bag, and you’re ready to go.
